The Making of a Successful Move

To avoid last minute problems you have to plan your move well. Start by collecting boxes and packing paper. Reserve your mover as soon as you know the date of your move: in transporting your goods do not hesitate to ask for additional insurance if necessary. Make up a list for the movers, of all the articles to be moved. Pack what you will not use before the move so you will have less to do at the last minute.

Here is a little reminder that will help your move go smoothly:

TWO MONTHS BEFORE THE MOVE, ADVISE:

• Governments and public services
  the telephone company;
  the heating oil company;
  the electric company;
  the post office;
  the Société d'assurance automobile du Quebec;
  Customs and Revenue Canada Agency and Revenu Quebec;
  the Régie de l'assurance-maladie du Quebec;
  the Régie des rentes du Quebec;

A FEW DAYS BEFORE THE MOVE :

• Reserve a babysitter for the children.
• Gather the boxes and other things to be moved into the same room, preferably on the ground floor.
• Confirm arrangements with the mover: date, price, insurance, time of arrival and directions for getting to your home. Leave your phone number in case of emergency.

THE NIGHT BEFORE THE MOVE:

• Remove any curtains and blinds.
• Insure that passages and driveways to be used by the movers are free.
• Identify boxes and articles left with the movers and the articles you will move yourself.

THE DAY OF THE MOVE:

• Note the meter readings (electricity, oil etc.).
• Check the condition of furniture before it leaves.
• Bring your telephone.
• Inspect every room to make sure nothing is forgotten.
• Before leaving, leave the keys with the appropriate person.
• Keep your important documents like checks, moving contract and bill, etc.

WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT YOUR DESTINATION:

• Note any damage which occurred during transportation.
• Write any articles the movers lost or damaged on their delivery order.
• Note the meter readings (electricity, oil etc.) at your new home.
